Assessment ledger - Chesnut Ward, 1772.

The Philadelphia Overseers of the Poor Assessment Ledger for Chestnut Ward consists of one manuscript notebook, labeled, "Chesnut Ward, Samuel Sanson, Jun 2." The first entry consists of a signed charge by the Magistrates of the City and County of Philadelphia to the Overseers of the Poor. The magistrates listed are John Gibson, Sam Rhoads, William Fisher, Samuel Mifflin, and Will Parr. The second page states tax levied by the Overseers of the Poor of City, Southwark District, Townships of Moyamensing and Passyunk, and the Northern Liberties of three pence on the pound and six shilling per head on the estates and inhabitants of the City for the support of the poor in the Alms House and House of Employment in the city. The signatures of the Overseers follow. The body of the book consists of 17 written account book pages that list the inhabitants, their occupations, the amount levied, and what was paid. If not paid, the reasons are also listed. Inhabitants include men and women.

The Philadelphia Overseers of the Poor was created in 1705/1706 by the officers of Philadelphia's Corporation to levy and collect a poor tax and distribute its proceeds among the city's indigent. In 1749 the Overseers were incorporated; in 1766 the Assembly also incorporated "The Contributors to the Relief and Employment of the Poor of the City of Philadelphia, the District of Southwark, and the Townships Northern Liberties, Moyamensing and Passyunk," a body of citizens who were given authority ...
